Creek Van Houten
Compass Rose Design
My mother was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. I grew up surrounded by the artifacts of her Dutch family culture: my great-grandmother’s brass teakettle and potato bucket, my grandmother’s turn of the century glass marbles, chipped from use. A child’s dress zipped up tight in a storage bag: lace cap, scratchy black wool top and striped skirt, a beaded necklace with coiled filigree clasp. I wore that outfit every Halloween for as many years as it fit me.
Marissa Frost
Granny Panty Designs
Marissa Frost started Granny Panty Designs in 2010. The business name is a tribute to Marissa’s 5 grandmothers that she was so fortunate to grow up with. Her great granny owned a stationery store in the San Fernando Valley, which employed one of her grandmas, her mother, and many other family members. Marissa decided to study art and photography at UC Santa Cruz, and later moved to San Francisco
KYLA O'NEILL
IMPRESSED by nature
IMPRESSED by nature evolved organically from a desire to preserve the beauty of nature in a wearable form. An elementary teacher by trade, Kyla has been creating pressed flower jewelry since the summer of 2011. She has always loved creating with her hands, including a thriving vegetable and flower garden in her backyard in Oakland, CA. Kyla has had a deep love for flowers from a very young age and she finds immeasurable joy in working with plants each day.
Maggie Hurley
Maggie Hurley ~ Whimsy & Whatnot
Armed with her grandmother’s artistic proclivities, a stack of Brian Froud books, and some watercolors, Maggie taught herself to paint when she was a kid. She spent a year and a half at an art school in Southern California (the Laguna College of Art & Design), which she adored, and has continued honing her skills ever since. Sometimes she's convinced that there are at least three different artists holed up in her head.
Jeannine Komush
Tangleweeds
Jeannine Komush was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. From a young age she collected rocks and twigs, shells found at the beach, feathers found on sidewalks and brought them home to arrange in tidy piles on her childhood desk. That early love of nature and the beautiful ephemera it creates, led in a serpentine way to a love for creating jewelry. In September of 2009 she started Tangleweeds and her jewelry making business adventures began.
Laura Shields
Made From Books
Made From Books is a line of jewelry that uses unwanted, falling apart, or outdated books as their source material. Each piece is laser cut and assembled with care by at our workshop in Oakland, California. We then donate a portion of our profits to support literacy programs world-wide. Because our materials are so unusual, it really does feel like a collaboration with the books: we provide the shapes and designs, but each book provides the color, personality, and story, so to speak.
